Introducing Amy

Hi everyone! I’m excited to introduce our new admissions editor, Amy Bonnaffons ( @amycbon ). I’ve known Amy for a long time, and there is no one I trust more for this job: she’s an essay ninja.

Amy earned her BA from Yale and her MFA in fiction from NYU. Her work has been published everywhere from The New York Times (check out this one) and The Wall Street Journal to Kenyon Review and The Sun, earning awards and fellowships galore along the way. She has deep editorial and admissions essay experience, and she happens to be the first person I send all of my own fiction and essays to.

You’ll find her full bio on the About page, but I’ll share a couple more facts that she’d be too embarrassed to tell you herself. She recently landed a high-powered agent for her brain-exploding novel about angels (humans too), and she has grapheme-color synesthesia, which makes her a real-life editing superhero.

For the time being, everyone who signs up for a Premium admissions course or higher will be getting an extra good deal, since we’ll be reading over each other’s work and conferring to make sure we’re giving you the best possible advice. (You’ll only be communicating with one of us, though.)

Let’s welcome Amy to the community!

Too many schools on resume

Due to taking some random classes after college, and enrolling in a data analytics program recently at a local community college, I've got a lot of schools to list under the education section of my resume. This sort of sucks, because I would rather use precious resume room on cool extracurriculars.

Right now, I have 3 schools listed - my undergrad institution, the community college I'm in currently enrolled in the data analytics program in, and a third school I took a poli sci class from last year. I was not planning to include this third school, but @david.busis suggested I included it so that it didn't appear like I was hiding anything.

I also studied abroad in undergrad, and a lot of sites suggest including that school to add some personality to your resume. However, that would result in me listing 4 schools, which both seems ridiculous and will take up way too much real estate. I'm leaning towards just omitting the study abroad school, since that won't boost my resume much, and leaving the third school (at which I took the online poli sci class) to avoid any potential harm not fully disclosing that course might cause. Does this seem like the best plan to you all?

Hi all,

I'm going to an LSAC forum tomorrow and was wondering what to do/dress/wear. I'm actually applying to the 2018 cycle (not this year's application cycle) so will probably just go to the workshops, not so much talk to reps (I hope to do that next year.)

Any advice appreciated!

Hi guys. Looking for some friendly advice.

I've studied off and on for about a year now. My last time studying was about 5 months ago. I am 100% committed to writing and plan on taking the June LSAT.

I've gone through most of the curriculum with 7sage. I still have a bit more Reading Comprehension and I haven't really touched Logic Games yet.

How should I go about starting to study again?

Should I start with Reading Comprehension and then move to Logic Games and end with reviewing Logical Reasoning? I am planning to go over all of the 7sage material again.

I am working 2 jobs right now - about 50 hours a week - so time is precious. I am studying a couple hours a night during the week and spending more time on the weekends studying.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

The Full (and now REVISED) Schedule

And if you’d like to see the full schedule for upcoming reviews, here it is: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=h14k4idvt1lb4hp5ujds97qt7k@group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/New_York

Note:

  • For everyone: take the PT under timed conditions; BR as you are able on your own; then join us for all or part of the call—everyone is welcome.
  • Note: For the purposes of the call, we like to check our group blind review score together at the very end of the call :) So at least don't say ... "No guys, really, it's D, I checked it.” KEEP THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOURSELF. Win the argument with your reasoning.
  • These groups work best when folks from ALL stages of prep and with all different goals join in! Not just for "super-preppers" and definitely not just for the casual LSATer (does such a person exist?).
  • The only expectation anyone has for these calls is for you to have fun and ask questions as you desire. We are just a bunch of LSAT lovers who gather via GoToMeeting and intellectually slaughter each test.

I've recently ordered Kaplan for LR but I feel like I need to practice LR much more. I've read here before that powerscore bibles aren't that good. But I want to know how the workbooks are. Are they helpful if I just want to practice LR more?

    Hi,

A few weeks ago, I applied for accommodations, namely 1.5X the regular time and a quiet room. I just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else wants to apply as well.

I applied during the late registration deadline, so I only had a few days to gather my documents. I have a learning disability with ADHD as well. I was diagnosed during my 2nd year of university, and I had never applied for any accommodations at school or for standardized tests. I was afraid that they were going to reject my request because I had no past history, but they approved it!

All I included in my accommodations package were the three forms required by LSAC, a doctor's note confirming my disability and that I wasn't taking any medication, and a psychological evaluation of my learning disabilities with the test results/analysis. I applied on October 25th, and got a response today on November 9th.

I'm really glad that LSAC streamlined the process and made receiving accommodations more accessible. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to PM me.

Also, thank you to everyone at 7Sage for helping me out as well!

    I need some advice..

I have been studying for 4 months and my scores are going up (thanks 7 sage!) One area I know I can improve on is LG... I have an average of -9 on my LG PTs..so I can definitely get extra points in this area.

I have spent countless hours going over games in the early 30s-70s. I have practiced timing myself for full sections, single games, and I have practiced without a time constraint.

I have been using a strategy that a 7-sager suggested- with an excel doc recording each PT Game I have done with the date, time and score. I expected the mass of games that I studied to help with fresh PTs, but I still feel rushed under time constraint (often leaving several questions unfinished). I have definitely made a lot of improvement and going over the games has increased my confidence, but what type of prep will increase speed??

Thanks 7-sagers you are the best!!!

    Thanks 7sage!

I took the LSAT after self studying with some popular study aids and didnt do as well as I hoped. I vowed to do better the second time around and signed up with your program. After studying for 4 months, I took the LSAT again and my score went up 8 points! I also met a great person in the discussions forum that would trade personal statements with me. I critiqued hers and she did the same for me. Finally, I sent out my applications. I applied to 15 schools, got rejected to two, waitlisted 3, and the rest not only accepted me, but offered me scholly money.I m almost done with my first semester! I'm not at Yale or Harvard, but I'm in a great school and I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you guys and that girl that helped me with my personal statement. Thanks again.

Greetings fellow 7sagers. I took the Sept. LSAT and did not score as I hoped so I am retaking in Dec. I am virtually out of virgin study material unless I go way back to PTs that do not have comparative passages (I really hope 79 comes out soon). I just tried taking PT 70 over again but I felt that I remembered too many of the questions even though it has been 3 months since I first took it. I finished every section well under the time constraints and missed only two questions. I feel like the real Dec. LSAT is going to be a huge kick in the teeth because I am out of practice on reacting to unseen questions. Should I do some older PTs (not sure how many of those I even have that are untouched) or does anyone have any other recommendations?

I am struggling with both direction for study and motivation (in part because I feel stuck and directionless).

    Please help.

    Thanks.

    February LSAT- Study tips

It is officially about 3 months away from the February LSAT and I am extremely stoked but still a little nervous. People have suggested three months as the best amount of time one should spend in studying. But I find that despite this effort, one might still fall short of one's intended goal due to a number of different factors. One factor which I believe is crucial for progress is the ability to study efficiently.

When it comes to standardized testing, I suck at studying efficiently. I sometimes find myself spending enormous amount of time studying but never breaking the "plateau". With that being said, I would like to get some insights on how you all study. Outside of the 7sage curriculum, how do you all fine tune the skills needed (e.g. speed etc). For example, as a philosophy major I try to spend time really understanding the subtleties embedded in arguments in the readings that I'm assigned as a helping tool. What else do you all recommend?

Also, I know it can be hard to study for the LSAT while one is still in school but this is a reality for many of us. In school, I work best when I follow a routine that I've set for myself, otherwise I'll procrastinate my whole life away. I've been thinking of ways to fuse these two into my schedule but I would also like to hear other thoughts as well.

Hey all. First time poster here!

I am scheduled to take the December LSAT, but since I registered two months ago, I've decided to shoot for a higher score/better school and take it again in June 2017. I'm currently scoring a 160, BR-ing around 168, and my new goal is 170+. I think I can do this by June, but definitely not by December.

My worry is this: if I score a 160 in December and a 170 in June, will law schools heavily consider the first score and/or average the two? I'm looking at schools like Georgetown, Michigan, Chicago, Northwestern, and I want them to see my best score. On the other hand, experiencing test-day anxiety and getting a feel for the process this December before I do the real deal in June sounds beneficial.

    Any Sage advice?

I am 100% a believer in 7sage's effectiveness for LSAT prep, but now that that's out of the way, I was wondering how effective people have found the Admissions accounts. And if you did use them for your application, which level did you sign up for and how do you feel it helped you?

I've been working on my personal statement and all other application necessities on my own, but feel like it might be best to leave no stone unturned and enroll professional help. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hi guys I would appreciate it if someone could review my reasoning for this question and let me know if this is correct. When BRing I realized that I made a mistake and chose A rather than E which is correct.

Basically if negated, A says something along the lines of less than 51% of those people who abandon the use of chemical fertilizers will periodically grow alfalfa. Now this may be tempting but it doesn`t really do much, our argument doesn`t say that every person needs to make this switch, just that in order to improve the soil structure we need to ditch chemical fertilizers and begin growing green manure crops.

E is a much better answer because it tells us that we can`t use chemical fertilizers AND grown green manure crops, so we have to ditch chemical fertilizers as stated in the argument

When negated it sounds somewhat like, some farmers in the region will grow green manure even if they do not abandon the use of chemical fertilizers, suggesting that we do not need to ditch the fertilizers in order to grow green manure, and ruining our argument.

I also struggled a little with answer choice D, but here`s my reasoning

I think its incorrect because when negated it just says chemical fertilizers themselves do not have a destructive effect on soil, this can be true because the argument is assuming that its the switch from green manure to chemicals that has deteriorated the soil structure, it doesn`t need to be that the chemicals themselves are destructive.

Let me know what you think!

    I recently took PT 59.

I've been scoring in the low to mid-160s, but this time it dropped to 156. I suppose a 4ish point drop isn't that big of a deal, but let me explain why I'm panicking (and not just because the test is less than 30 days away)

On Sec 2 (LR), I got 6 answers wrong. Not my best, but I suppose it's not terrible either.

    However, on Sec 3 (LR), I got 10 answers wrong -- #15 through #25.

Has this happened to anyone, getting this many consecutive answers wrong? If so, what do you think happened here?

I know usually questions get harder by the end of each section, but I didn't perform like this on Section 2. Maybe I was tired especially hitting Section 3 (but usually this doesn't happen to me). Maybe it was just a bad day and it's not indicative of my other PTs. But maybe not. I want to know if any of you have gotten this many consecutive answers wrong? Could you shed some light on what you think caused it and how you improved (both test-taking strategy and reviewing your answers)?

    Thanks!

Hey there, folks! As I'm finally gearing up to send out my applications (fingers crossed!), I'd like some quick info on how to handle my social medias. Things like inappropriate pictures aren't a problem for me, but I was wondering about other small things which I ought to be showing/am better off leaving hidden or set to private.

Hopefully many 7sagers could benefit from this as well. For a couple specific questions to get things kicked off: I have a twitter, but I almost never tweet. When I do, it's almost always sports related as I'm a huge college football fan. There's no profanity or anything like that which would make it inappropriate, though. Keep it set to private? I'm about to graduate with my undergrad and I'm also engaged. Is this some info that I should display or am I better off having those things set to private? Does it matter?

So, assuming this hasn't been done before or there's no thread out there currently, what are some questions other people have and can anyone assist with some answers? What are some good tips? Really appreciate any and all discussion in advance!

    Older Games Harder?

Does anyone else find the games in the earlier PTs (35 and under) to be harder than the newer ones? In the 70s, the first 3 games are always so easy, and then there's just 1 really hard one at the end. But the earlier exams I feel are so much harder. No clue why.
